The role of absorbents when dealing with spills

Spills can occur at any time. They cannot be avoided totally, hence it is advisable to take precautionary measures. Spills can differ widely depending on the substance that is involved, the size of the spill and the place where it has been spilt.

Absorbents are available in three major types and are sorted by the type of spill:

• Hazmat

• Oil

• Universal

Absorbents are colour coded for easy selection: yellow for hazmat, white for oil and grey for universal.

You should get the yellow type of absorbent if you store or transport hazardous material. The white type of absorbents is right for you if you deal with hydrocarbons and oils. The universal type of absorbent is ideal for all types of spills. It is necessary to have the required type of absorbents at your workplace and even in vehicles carrying chemicals.

There are different forms of hydrocarbons available on the market, suitable for both small and large spills. A few sheets or oil pads of an oil absorbent roll are required to clean up small spills. On the other hand, you will require oil brooms for a larger spill.

Absorbents can also be used as mats and filters. Mats can be used by either placing them underneath leak prone machinery or can be used in high traffic areas. Absorbents should absorb oil and hydrocarbons while they repel water thus protecting underground water from oil and chemicals.

Absorbents are capable of handling any type of spill. It is essential to get the right absorbent for the specific situation.
